FlightCaster is a tool for predicting flight delays. The app uses an algorithm that analyzes data from the last ten years and matches it to current conditions.
FlightCaster launched in 2009 and has been featured in TechCrunch, PC World, The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. In January 2011, the app was acquired by Next Jump, a reward program company.
This unique application provides predictions of specific flight arrival statuses based on past and present data. It works best within six hours of the flight.
Users simply enter the flight information up to six hours before the flight. The app then generates a “Predicted Arrival Status” including the percent chance the flight will be on time, less than 60 minutes late, and more than 60 minutes late. It also provides analysis of Delay Factors: Inbound Aircraft, Departure Airport Status (FAA Alerts), Official Airline Status, Departure Weather, and Arrival Weather.
The app is easy to use and the results are clearly displayed. Although the homepage indicates that the app also assists users in evaluating and booking alternative flights, this function does not appear in the results screen. This would be helpful when discovering that a flight is going to be delayed. Instead, a user must return to home screen and enter departure and arrival locations and look at flight choices, returning and reentering the information each time another flight is checked.
At the moment, FlightCaster is only available for US domestic flights.
No registration is required.
The application is free to use online and the accompanying iPod/iPhone/Blackberry apps are also free.
US travelers will find this free application very useful.
