Fab was created to build a fun, interactive community for gay men. The site is intended to help more people discover and become a part of the gay world. The site covers many topics, focused primarily on people and places on some of the world’s most popular cities, including Sydney, New York, London, Chicago, Toronto, Cape Town, Atlanta, Vancouver, Madrid, Rio, Barcelona, Amsterdam, Miami, Seattle, Boston, San Francisco, Paris, Montreal, San Diego and Washington, D.C. Users can discover and rate vacation destinations, shops, night clubs, restaurants, and more. The site also offers health and travel information. Fab offers users a great way to discover new places and get in touch with the gay community found all over the world.
Fab was founded by Jason Goldberg. The site was intended to create a social networking environment that allowed men to review places and learn more about others in the gay community. Goldberg has also created two other popular online applications, including Jobster and SocialMedian. Fab is still relatively new and is constantly evolving to improve its offerings to the user community. Almost daily, user feedback is reviewed and possible updates and additions are assessed to help grow Fab.
Most of the time, when someone hears about a website focused on gay men, they think of dating sites. Fab was not created to be another hook up site, but rather a meaningful place to learn about the gay community. Users can post business reviews in each of the available cities and share information about themselves.
Fab has a very attractive design that works well as a social networking website. Users are greeted by a large header in grey with images of smiling faces, famous locations, and men exploring the world. The layout is clean and neat with plenty of personality. From the stylish Fab logo to the clutter free user profiles, users will be drawn in to Fab and the community that adores it.
A new user can register for a Fab membership by clicking on the pink “Join Now” button at the bottom, center of the homepage. A pop up box appears explaining that the user must login through an existing Facebook account. To do so, the user must click the large, blue “Facebook Connect” button found in the box. Another browser will appear to direct the user to the Facebook login page where they can enter their username and password and begin accessing Fab features. Unfortunately there is no other log in option for Fab. Users must access the site through Facebook.
Offering free membership is a definite plus for a budding social network site. Fab is no different. User scan log in through their Facebook accounts and get full access for free. There are no subscription fees and no other purchases required to use Fab. The site does not currently offer a premium paid membership, with no indication that they plan to in the near future. Users can enjoy Fab without spending a dime to do so. Of course, there are ways to spend money through the site. A shop link takes the user to Fab’s online store. Here, users can purchase logo merchandise including t-shirts, stickers, swimwear and art. Users are not required to purchase items, but doing so does help support Fab.
Fab is designed for an outgoing gay community and this is exactly the type of user it appeals to. The site is professional in appearance with a look reminiscent of magazine covers. Users can discover new places, share opinions through reviews, or tell the Fab community a little about themselves to connect with others who share similar interests and opinions.
