Endorse for a cause is an application that collects money from retailers when users endorse the site via social networks. Retailers have partnered with the site are willing to donate based on the increased traffic and revenue from participating shoppers. The money goes to the cause selected by the user.
Endorse for a cause was founded by Ed Trimble in 2009 in an effort to reward companies willing to contribute to causes that make an impact in people’s lives.
This is NOT a non-profit company. 70% of money received goes to the chosen causes. It promotes causes by users endorsing business through their Facebook and Twitter accounts.
Immediately after signing up, users are taken to a screen that asks them to choose a retailer, select a message, and publish the promotion to Facebook or Twitter. This step is optional and can be closed.
Retailers are diverse and listed by category for browsing. There are many well-known sites, including endless.com, Fossil, Fandango, Gap, Macy’s, Netflix, Office Depot, Priceline, and more. Users choose a site and click “endorse” to post a message to Facebook or Twitter before shopping.
Members can also complete their profiles with full name, postal code, photo, and a personal mission statement. Finally, users can vote on new causes to be added. When a cause reaches 1,000 votes, it will be added to the site. Users may also nominate causes to be added to the prospective cause list.
Overall the site is easy to use. Users must be comfortable allowing the site access to their social networking accounts. With recent privacy concerns, users may be less interested in granting access.
Users select a cause from the ten listed and indicate whether they would like their personal information shared with the cause. Account creation is accomplished by providing an email address, password, and username. At this point, users also indicate whether they would like to receive newsletters. Facebook and Twitter connections are also an option.
Use of the application is free.
Online shoppers who also like the idea of helping a charitable cause may be interested in using Endorse for a cause. The only drawback is the necessity of linking social networking accounts to the Endorse site.
