What can you use the application for?
EditGrid is a web-based spreadsheet application.
What is the history and popularity of the application?
EditGrid is a relatively new site, having launched in early 2006. It was developed to take advantage of new online techniques that allow the implementation of web applications. EditGrid concentrated from the offset on the spreadsheet market. It allows you to create spreadsheets in your web browser, as well as upload and view spreadsheets of many formats, such as Excel and OpenOffice. When you use the spreadsheet you can use all the usual cell commands for adding, subtracting and dividing numbers, just as you would in a standard spreadsheet.
What are the differences to other applications?
EditGrid, unlike other companies such as Google and Zoho, don't offer a total suite of office applications and instead opt to concentrate solely on spreadsheet functions. This seems to have paid dividends, as EditGrid seems to be the best of the online spreadsheet applications. It is very responsive, professional looking and the online collaboration functions are especially impressive, with files autosaved very regularly. However, like all online spreadsheet applications, it's still not quite there yet, especially when compared to more traditional, computer-based apps. For example, there is an upload limit of 2MB per spreadsheet. If you are doing serious data analysis or large finances then this won't suffice. But for simple spreadsheets it is more than ample.
How does the application look and feel to use?
EditGrid takes a very businesslike approach to site design. Greys and blues dominate the scene and there are no fancy graphics. There doesn't seem to be any advertising present, even on the free version. The interface looks very similar to a typical computer based spreadsheet, with File, Edit and other menus in just the place you'd expect to find them.
How does the registration process work?
During the registration process you will be asked for your name and e-mail. You will also be asked to specify a username and password. Unfortunately you can't choose to use your e-mail address as your username, so make sure you choose a username that you can remember. There are two check boxes for promotional mail that are selected by default, so be sure to deselect them if you aren't interested in receiving junk mail.
What does it cost to use the application?
The basic spreadsheet facility is free, but companies and business organisations can sign up for a premium service based on the number of users. The premium service offers increased storage space, better collaboration tools, secure file transfers and even the option of a private server.
Who would you recommend the application to?
If you are looking for an online spreadsheet, and don't care about other online office apps, such as word processing and presentations, then this is your best bet.
  • Fully featured online spreadsheet.
  • View and edit many formats online.
  • Powerful collaboration tools.
  • Not as powerful as computer-based spreadsheets.
