EBuddy is a web based instant messenger service that allows users to bring all of their favorite IM programs together into one place. The current version of eBuddy works with a number of the most popular messaging applications and social network messengers. The list includes Yahoo, MSN, AIM, Facebook, ICQ, My Space and GTalk.
The user creates an eBuddy ID and can link all of their other messenger programs to it. Rather than opening each individual program and logging in with multiple usernames and passwords, the user can log in to their eBuddy account and access all of their contact lists.
The application also supports a mobile phone version that allows users to chat with all of their contacts while away from the computer.
eBuddy was founded in September of 2003 by Onno Bakker, Jan-Joost Rueb and Paulo Taylor. The application was intended to bring together many web based messenger programs into one convenient application.
The company is based in Amsterdam, San Francisco and London. The current eBuddy team consists of around 60 individuals, including COO Bakker, Chief Commercial Officer Rogier van den Heuvel, Vice Presidents of Product and Marketing Martijn Jansen and Rueb, Director of Mobile Product Jan-Joost Kraal and CFO Wijnand van de Calseijde.
Many websites offer another type of instant messenger program. Rather than add to the already long list, eBuddy was created to give internet users an easier way to use all of their IM programs without the hassle of opening and logging in to each individually. The user can chat with anyone on all of their contact lists with only one username and password.
eBuddy has a very clean, user friendly appearance that works well for its intended purpose. The user can easily identify each individual instant messenger program by either reading the white text name or by glancing at the corresponding color icon. The user only has to enter their credentials for each once by selecting the blue button for the programs they wish to use.
New users can create en eBuddy account by clicking on the light colored “eBuddy ID” button found near the top, center of the homepage (within the main navigation bar). The user must click the green and white “Create an eBuddy ID” button found along the left hand side of the following page to access the registration form. The form pops up and asks the user to provide an eBuddy ID name, password, email address, age and gender. A small check box on the second page of the form is available to sign the user up for the eBuddy newsletter.
eBuddy is available to all users for free. The site does not charge for creating an account or logging in to instant messenger programs. All users are given access to all current features offered by the application. The site notes that additional premium features are coming soon, but does not make any mention of the addition of a subscription or any other fees associated with the application.
eBuddy.com is ideal for anyone who uses multiple messengers frequently. It is more appealing for those who use numerous IM programs on a daily basis. The application allows the user to add all of their IM credentials to one place. The user only needs a single log in to access all of their contacts across IM applications.
