DropSend

What can you use the application for?
DropSend is an application to send large files to other people without being restricted by email attachment sizes. With DropSend you upload a file online and the receiver gets an email with a download link.
What is the history and popularity of the application?
DropSend was made by Ryan Carson. In 2006 he tried to sell DropSend but this didn't work out. Afterwards DropSend was run by Ryans new employer Carson Systems, a company which also organises events for the web industry. The application was sold to Webminds, Inc in Semptember 2008.
What are the differences to other applications?
The major difference with other file send applications is the maximum size of a file you can send with the free version. With other applications this is usually 100MB, while DropSend allows you to send files up to 1GB, even in the free plan. Besides the size advantage the 14 days that you have to download a file are also longer than most other applications offer.
How does the application look and feel to use?
The DropSend interface is easy on the eyes and looks great. After logging in you are taken to an overview screen with your inbox, outbox and stored items. Sending a new file is easy but make sure to click the 'send' button at the bottom instead of the 'cancel' one that is all too easy to hit accidentally. When you send a file, a pop-up window displays your upload progress and speed in realtime.
How does the registration process work?
DropSend always requires a registration while most other file send applications let you send a file without logging in. Registration is easy and only requires a name, email and password. You get a welcome email but no confirmation of your email address is required. For the receiving party an account is automatically generated and sent with the email they get, this account is not required to download the file they receive.
What does it cost to use the application?
DropSend has a couple of ways to create revenue. They have paid options which allow you to store more files online. When you send a file you are given the option to store it online and with the free version this is limited to 250MB. The paid versions increase this limit up to 250GB with the 99 dollar per month Business version. This version also allows you to share the same storage area with multiple persons. The second source of revenue are small ads at the top of the screen. The last source of revenue are the so-called 'Gift' suggestions displayed in the overview screen. These contain links to online gift stores.
Who would you recommend the application to?
We can fully recommend DropSend to people wanting to send large files. Currently it is widely used in the creative industry to send artwork to clients but it is really fit for anyone. The only exception could be when you only want to send a few files under 100MB. In this case, it is easier to use a competitive application which doesn't require you to create an account.
