Dopplr is a sleek application that allows users to organize and share their travel plans. The site is focused on both pleasure vacations and business trips. The user can learn about popular travel cities, including Atlanta, Berlin, Barcelona, Chicago, Portland, New York, Singapore, Shanghai, Cologne, Toronto, Zurich, San Francisco, Stockholm, Miami, Tokyo and many other destinations. Dopplr suggests smart places to stay while visiting each city as well as popular attractions and highly rated businesses. The user can create a travel itinerary on Dopplr and share it with a select group. Dopplr also allows users to see where their plans overlap and they might have an opportunity to meet up with a friend or relative. The site also encourages users to provide advice and suggestions for their fellow travelers.

What is the history and popularity of the app?

Dopplr was founded by Lisa Sounio, Marko Ahtisaari and Matt Biddulph. The site was created to provide users with an online travel planning tool. The current company is based in London and includes CTO Biddulph, CEO Ahtisaari, board member Saul Klein and Design Director Matt Jones. Dopplr.com was acquired by Nokia in September 2009.

What are the differences to other apps?

Dopplr provides users with an easy way to organize and share their upcoming travel plans. Unlike other websites which seemed geared towards vacations, Dopplr also caters to user who are making business related travel plans. The user can share their plans with a private group, so only those they trust know where they are going and when they will get there.

How does the web app look and feel to use?

The Dopplr website welcomes users with a very clean, professional design that still manages to attract pleasure travelers. The homepage features a large, wide color image of a night time cityscape. The user is greeted by the intricate light patterns and blue and black color scheme found in the image against a pure white background. The bottom of the page includes columns of light blue links that help the user find specific destinations.

How does the registration process work?

A new user can join the Dopplr community by clicking the light blue “Join Dopplr Now” link found along the left hand side of the page. The following page includes a registration form that asks for a first and last name, home city, screen name, email address, password and website. After clicking the white “Save Details” button at the bottom of the form, the user is taken to a form that allows them to invite others to join Dopplr. This step can be skipped. The user can also invite friends from their social networks and email contact lists, including Gmail, Facebook, Outlook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Flickr, Yahoo Mail and Windows Live Hotmail.

What does it cost to use the application?

Dopplr offers a simple service that is free to all users. Anyone can join the community and give Dopplr a try without paying anything to do so. This is definitely a good way to encourage more users to sign up and participate in the community. The user can access their account as often as they like and are never required to purchase anything, although the site does offer a Dopplr online shop.
