The website can also be viewed as an effectual social content website comprising of huge information database on diverse range of topics. In addition to obtaining the required URLs and highlighted text, Diigo users also gain insights of other members of the website. Conclusively, Diigo is a multidimensional application that caters to the varied needs of web users by offering the features social networking and social bookmarking through single platform.
What is the history and popularity of the app?
Diigo was born out of the minds of founders Wade Ren and Maggie Tsai. Based out of Reno, Nevada, Ren and Tsai created a social annotation service. Users were able to compile libraries and add their own notes and highlights. These overlaid elements could be referenced later as the user needed them. Users are also given public and private setting options so they can collaborate and share their notes with others, or keep them out of sight. Plug ins were later added so that the user could easily share their Diigo resources with others.
What are the differences to other apps?
Diigo offers users a number of helpful tools that allow them to essentially take notes online directly on the resources they need. While it is impossible to alter a website that a user does not own, and taking hand written or typed notes can be cumbersome, Diigo simplifies the process. Users can add notes that appear as overlays on the website along with highlights that can be color coded by the user. The user can return later and their notes and highlights will still be visible.
How does the web app look and feel to use?
The Diigo website provides visitors with a pleasant blue and white color scheme highlighted by a well made video that further explains the application. There is no clutter or obnoxious advertisements on the site, so anyone can quickly navigate unhindered. The highlighting and note tools work directly on the website, so users can see their comments and highlights in context.
How does the registration process work?
A new user can create a Diigo account by clicking the “Join Diigo” link at the top right hand corner of the homepage. The account creation form requires a username, first and last name, email address, and password. Users can also simplify the registration process by logging in through an existing Yahoo!, Google, Twitter, and Facebook profile. After submitting the information, the user is advised that their account is created but an activation link sent to the email address provided must be clicked to complete the process.
What does it cost to use the application?
For the moment, anyone can visit the Diigo website and create an account for free. No premium paid account information is listed. Users are given access to all features and sharing functions. That being said, Diigo is still in beta, so the free account option may change in the future. The tool is easy to use although additional functions would be needed to justify charging a subscription fee. No word has been given as far as whether a premium account will be offered in the future.
Who would you recommend the application to?
Anyone who does a lot of online reading or research can really enjoy Diigo. The application allows users to highlight and add notes that are relevant to them. Users can leave and return later to reference the notes they made before, which makes Diigo a great tool for creating a reference library when working on a project.

Oh, so this website (appappeal) is NOT kept up to date. Darn. The registration cost described here is completely wrong. That means the rest of the review could be out of date too.
