Coroflot is a huge collection of online professional portfolios for students and professionals to display their work.
The app was founded in 1998 and has since grown to over 1.4 million images of work and portfolios of over 150,000 students and professionals. The app was started and is still run by designers.
With free space for a portfolio, Coroflot is attractive to designers and the appealing site and ease of use will appeal to businesses seeking designers as well.
Once registered, a user is directed to a home page to develop a profile and other activity. The profile is partially completed by the registration information, but users may add a link to their personal website, work status (whether currently seeking full time or freelance clients), privacy settings, display settings for “my activity” page which is basically a blog, comment settings – whether to allow comments and if so whether to email the user when a comment is posted, set whether to allow others to “likey” your work or follow your activities.
Professional details such as job title, specialties, experience, overview, and resume may also be added. Education, affiliations, awards, and achievements may be noted. An avatar may be uploaded.
Users may upload up to seven files at one time into the portfolio. After choosing the files, users create a name for the set. Optional details, such as title, description, and up to ten tags per file may be added as well. On a high-speed broadband connection, three JPG files were uploaded in approximately one minute. Each image is given a thumbnail for the main page. These can be customized easily. By clicking on the image, it expands and a title and description may be added.
Activity updates must be done in 200 character limits.
Users may sign up to receive job alerts in various areas according to their criteria and frequency preferences.
In addition to an individual account, users can view design jobs in a variety of categories including, CAD, advertising, fashion design, sales and marketing, and web design. Users may also browse portfolios, member galleries, employer directory, groups, advice, and my account.
There are tons of groups that users may browse and join, or they can start a group of their own. This works to connect people with common work/interest. Groups pages contain short summaries of what the group is, an image pool that is contributed to by all members, discussion topics, and a list of members. Users may click a link to join the group or another to link to the group’s page. There seems to be very little in the discussion sections, but the image sections are packed with amazing photos of everything from typography to furniture design.
The advice section contains blog posts with information and advice on freelancing, portfolios, design, and other relevant topics.
The employer directory lists employers with job vacancies. Filter by employer or recruiter and sort by most recent, total jobs, or company name. Click on a company to view the available job vacancies and company profile. The member gallery may be sorted by specialty, and then listed by featured, most likeys, most recent, most viewed, or most comments.
First a user creates a portfolio, free of charge. No coding experience is necessary. Each user will be assigned a custom URL for their portfolio and will received detailed reports on image views and site traffic.
First and last name, city, state, country, email address, username, and password are needed to register an account.
Coroflot is free to use.
Coroflot might be useful for designers hoping to host their portfolios online, connect with others in similar fields, and discuss issues common to each type of design.
