Clue gives users a way to monitor how well their site performs in the eyes of visitors. The application works by allowing the user to submit a URL. The application turns the URL into a five and a half second test that the user can share through Facebook, Twitter, email or as a URL they can place anywhere. The user is given 24 hours to spread the URL around and get others to visit it and complete the test. Clue gathers the results and presents them to the user. The information obtained can help the user identify any weak points in their website. They can see which items and content users see and which go unnoticed when visitors stop by. Users can also compare competitor’s website to see how well their own URLs measure up in the eyes of visitors.
Clue was created by Zurb. The Zurb company was founded in June of 1998. The team includes Chief Instigator Bryan Zmijewski and partner Jeremy Britton as well as almost ten others. The company is based in Campbell, California and currently works with clients to help improve websites, online products and other services.
The service offered by Clue is not entirely original, however it could be effective for anyone who owns or runs a website. Users can gain unbiased insight into how a real visitor would interpret their website. Through Clue, users can find out which site elements are seen and which could use improvement.
The Clue website uses a very basic design that features a light colored background. The site is rather plain, with a solid black text logo found near the center of the page. Just below the logo, users can find the website submission tool. Below that, the user can find purple and white icons that explain how the site works.
Visitors to the Clue website are not required to log in to use the application. As soon as a newcomer arrives, they are greeted by the website submission tool. After filling out the form and clicking the purple “Create Memory Test” button to the right, the user is taken to the results page. A pop up box appears at the top of the results page and provides the user with test sharing tools. The test can be shared through Facebook, Twitter, email or by copy and pasting the link provided.
Clue is available to all users for free. There are no subscription fees or other cost required to use the application. As soon as a visitor arrives, they are given access to the URL submitter tool. The user only has to provide the URL they wish to test to get to the results page. The site does not currently offer a premium paid option and tests are only available for 24 hours. Users are not required to make any purchases or pay any other fees to use Clue.
