What can you use the app for?

BillMonk helps users keep track of money and other things they borrow or are borrowed from them. The user can add all the people they owe money or an item. For example, if the user borrows a book, they can add it to their BillMonk profile. The user can access each individual contact which provides an overview of all activity and outstanding debts. The user can see the total the contact owes them and the total they owe the contact with a break down that shows each individual transaction. BillMonk also helps users split bills that are shared with others, such as roommates. The application automatically splits the bill equally among all of the participants. The user can choose to alter amounts should a different breakdown be required. BillMonk also provides an online payment method that utilizes OboPay. The online method eliminates the need to write a check or give the friend cash in person.

What is the history and popularity of the app?

BillMonk was launched in January 2006 by Obopay, Inc. based in USA. Obopay is a first of its kind mobile service to help exchange money instantly between friends and family. BillMonk announced the website will be shut down, but it is not clear if and when this will happen.

What are the differences to other apps?

The web is full of finance themed websites and applications that help users manage bills and other debts. BillMonk is one of the few that focuses on personal loans and debts. Users can add even a small debt, such as a loan of $5 to a friend or an owed lunch, and keep track of who owes them and what they owe others. BillMonk covers the items that are often overlooked because few people bother to write them down.

How does the web app look and feel to use?

BillMonk.com welcomes users with varying shades of orange in the background. The homepage presents the user with the boldly outlined monk logo and a thought bubble representing the various people he owes or who owes him something. The application is very easy to use and the user can see a breakdown of all debts and loans. Clicking on a contact name will show the user all transactions and debts related to that individual.

How does the registration process work?

To get started, a new user can click the blue and white “Facebook” button found along the right hand side, inside the white box. Users who prefer to log in without their Facebook credentials can click the blue and white “Sign Up” button found at the top of the same white box. The following page presents the user with the registration form. The form asks for the user’s name, email address and password. A note at the bottom of the form advises the user that by submitting their information, they are agreeing to the BillMonk conditions of use.

What does it cost to use the application?

BillMonk offers access to all users for free. There are no subscription fees or other charges associated with using the application. The user is responsible for any fees incurred by OboPay when using the service to make a payment or send money to someone else online.

Who would you recommend the application to?

BillMonk.com is a tool for anyone who often loans out or borrows money or objects from friends. The application can also help roommates manage monthly bills and rent payments. The service is easy to learn and allows the user to set it up however they need to for maximum benefit. It is not clear if the site will stay online in the future.

  • Add a contact for each person you owe or loan something to
  • Record all loans and transactions, no matter how small
  • Send money online using OboPay
  • Break down shared bills
  • Review past and current transactions and debts

Do not use billmonk... Nowadays the website is down most of the time. I used it to settle money matters and now I'm struggling to access the same. When it does not serve its purpose, its of no use.

it gives "internal error" whenever i try to save any transaction, I left Buxfer when they lost 2 months of my transactions. Now Billmonk is going the same way. I don't mind paying a small amount, but the bad maintenance of this site just puts me off. This isn't the first time its giving me false bugs- have lost count of how many times this has happened. Just shut it down!

Billmonk used to be wonderful, but now the site is down more often than it is up.
