Bee TV gives users a place to watch personalized programming from anywhere with an internet connection. The user can provide information about their personal tastes and preferences and receive customized recommendations from Bee TV based on that information. The user can also share recommendations with others and provide ratings for Bee TV programs. Bee TV makes it possible to watch television shows when the user is ready to, so they never have to miss an episode. Users can also check out new programs and movies that they might like to expand their viewing options. Bee TV also allows users to build a personal watch list that is saved to their profile.
Bee TV was founded in August of 2007. Based out of Milan, Italy, the team currently consists of around 30 individuals including CEO Yoram Granit, CTO Yaniv Solnik, CMO Dean Scheu, Vice President of Business Development Bill Godwin and Chairman Rodolfo Hecht. The application was intended to offer users a personal television recommendation system. Today, many users visit Bee TV regularly to catch up on their favorite shows and discover new ones. Bee.tv was shut down in November 2011 because it failed to gain significant traction.
Watching television and movies online is not a new concept, but Bee TV takes it and makes it more personalized. Websites like YouTube may allow users to watch video clips and build favorites lists, but that’s about where the personalization ends. Bee TV actually allows users to put together a watch list and receive recommendations based on their personal preferences.
The Bee TV website uses a very sleek, modern design that combines a pixel texture with fiery reds and oranges offset against a black and grey background. A grey frame highlights the center of the homepage, reminiscent of a big screen television. The site has a very pleasant smooth feel about it that works exceptionally well.
A new user can join Bee TV by clicking on the large light grey “Sign Up!” button found along the bottom, left hand side of the homepage. The registration form can be found along the left hand column of the following page. The top of the form allows the user to upload an avatar to go with their profile. The registration form also asks for a first and last name, email address, password, age and gender. The bottom of the form includes a Captcha code entry to verify that the user is human. The user is immediately presented with a television show title and image taken from the show that they can rate using a five star system. Users can also skip this step if they have not seen the show. The user continues as the system begins to learn about their personal preferences.
Bee TV is available to anyone for free. There are no subscription fees and creating an account costs the user nothing. Access is free but viewing movies and television shows isn’t necessarily. Users must pay for the ability to view programs, which are purchased through iTunes. Some programs are listed but do not have any episodes available currently. Bee TV gives users an easy way to enjoy iTunes viewing.
Bee TV gives users an easy to use website to view their favorite movies and television programs. The site adds additional layers of functionality through personalized recommendations and the ability to create a user profile.
