Basecamp is created to help users organize and manage projects. The application supplies its users with a number of detailed features that make project management significantly easier. The user can review and manage schedules using calendars. Basecamp provides a calendar overview right on the user’s dashboard page. Users can upload and store files on a project by project basis, centralizing storage for each job. The user can also hold discussions with employees, team members and clients which are saved to their Basecamp account. The application also supports milestones, which are tracked on calendars. Mobile versions are available for iPhone and Android devices. Users can access Basecamp in a list of languages, including English, Russian, Japanese, Hungarian, Greek, Spanish, Finnish, Dutch, Swedish, Italian, French, Spanish, German, Portuguese and Danish. Basecamp also allows users to create project templates that can be used to decrease the amount of time needed to set up future projects. Basecamp is developed by 37signals and launched in February 2004. 37signals started designing websites in 1999 and created for each project a private network to simplify the communication between the company and clients. Soon they started to develop a web based service which could create such an extranet quick and easy on the fly. After 37signals realized such an application would be helpful to a lot of organisations Basecamp was born. 37signals is also the developer of Backpack, HighRise and CampFire. The company was founded by Carlos Seguar, Ernest Kim and Jason Fried. The team currently consists of less than 15 employees, including CEO Fried along with David Heinemeier Hansson and Stephen Campbell. Basecamp brings together a list of valuable features that help users manage their projects and resources better. The application includes all the typical project management features, such as to do lists, milestones, deadlines, calendars and discussions. Basecamp users can also create templates that can be used on future projects and centralize all their project files into one online location. Basecamp utilizes a professional, stylish design. The website welcomes users with colorful icons that add personality and hint at the visually appealing nature of the user interface. Contacts and chats include a small avatar image (generally the user’s photograph) along with their name and comment similar to a social networking status post. Calendars help users break down their schedule by days or weeks and the user dashboard provides an overview of upcoming deadlines and other important notes. New users can get started by clicking the green “Plans and Pricing” link found along the top of the Basecamp site (inside the black header bar). The user must click the green “Choose Plan” button that corresponds with their desired membership plan. After doing so, the user is directed to the registration form. The form asks for a first and last name, email address, company name, username, password and billing details. A note along the right side advises the user that they will not be charged until their 30 day trial is up. Basecamp provides users with three membership plan options. The first is the Plus plan which costs just under $50 per month and includes up to 35 projects, 15 GBs of storage space and unlimited users. The Premium plan costs around $100 per month and includes up to 100 projects and 30 GBs of storage space. The Max plan costs around $150 per month and gives the user unlimited projects and up to 75 GBs of storage space. Basecamp is intended for groups and teams completing professional projects. Users can communicate, collaborate and monitor deadlines as well as store their files and more all in one virtual place.
